Within the many great challenges we are facing at this time are also great opportunities for our human collective spiritual evolution. Our hope and opportunity are our children as they are the seeds we sow for the future.
A mature culture supports its members to grow into responsible adults. That responsibility includes exercising autonomous free will and aligning with their potential. This is based on the understanding that an individual’s health and well-being is vital to the health and well-being of their community and vice versa.
The SMSD Rites of Passage is a gift to our human family and the seven generations to continue our ongoing evolution. This gift of teachings and formal ceremonial practices is given to us by the Grandmothers and Grandfathers of the Twisted Hairs Council of Elders who take a large view of our human family’s evolution.
The Rites of Passage accord recognition to the human experience, honouring and celebrating the fact that all humans journey through common arenas of life experience to accomplish the next step on the road to maturity.
They provide an energy boost and set a context for each stage of development, honouring the rhythms of life: conception, birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, eldership and death, marking our movement from spirit into substance, the journey of life experience and back again from substance to spirit.
Each Rite of Passage is designed to facilitate natural growth and optimal development, and to acknowledge that change has happened or is about to happen, as well as convey a person’s right to grow and change.
The rites engage the power of the great teacher of Nature that provides our basic life energy and spiritual essence, and in this way, there is also established a respect, love and care for the Earth as part of our human growth and maturity.
Conscious Parenting
The SMSD Rites of Passage begin with preparing parents for conception. Becoming a parent is a life-changing transition into greater responsibility and therefore a perfect opportunity for maturation. Potential parents-to-be need to have the appropriate knowledge to be ready to take responsibility for conceiving, birthing, as well as raising a child. These preparations are sacred and will create an environment of stability and support to develop a story of success.
Meeting a child’s basic needs is the primary responsibility of parents and will be influenced by the cultural context within which the parenting takes place. Adults have the same basic needs. We each negotiate our life stages by following a blueprint laid down by our parents and culture. Some of us made our steps perhaps in reaction to our upbringing. How we experience and create our life depends upon how our basic needs and reality have been met.
The Rites of Passage give us knowledge of the sensitive, critical learning periods in the maturing process of a human spirit, and ways for parents, and other adults within the family structure if they desire, to respond to the basic needs of the child that will allow them to develop naturally into their authentic individuality.
